Hannah storms the capital
Celeb causes abound in Washington, but ESPN anchor Hannah Storm has one we hadn't heard of before: vascular birthmark advocacy.
Storm, 47, was born with a port-wine stain under her left eye. (Vascular birthmarks -- which include port-wine stains, and can cause life-threatening health problems -- are congenital, and affect one in 10 newborns.) As a child, Storm underwent several painful, expensive treatments, and now works with her eponymous foundation to make insurance companies cover such treatments.
On Friday, she spoke about her foundation at both Hogan & Hartson and the Brookings Institution, along with author Nicholas Sparks (who has a child with a birthmark). We asked her why more celebs don't talk about the issue.
Not many birthmark sufferers have enough confidence to be in the spotlight, Storm said, so "it is kind of funny that I went into TV." Her advice to others with vascular anomalies: "You have to choose -- whatever your dream is, to not let that get in the way."

• Hannah has been awarded one of ESPN Films 30 for 30 Documentary. Her Production Co, Brainstormin Productions and Look A Like Productions will start filming in October 2009. The film "Unmatched" is based on the Rivalry between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. The film is expected to air late in the summer of 2010.
• Hannah has Filmed a scene from the upcoming movie "Valentines Day", directed by Gary Marshall.

Hannah Storm named as a 2009 Champion of Literacy by the Literacy Advance of Houston
Hannah Storm will be named as a 2009 Champion of Literacy by the Literacy Advance of Houston, the oldest and largest community based, volunteer supported literacy organization in Texas. Storm will be honored at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, on May 1, 2009. The fundraising event will include dinner and the 4th Annual “What’s Your Favorite Book?” silent auction. Larry Dierker and Majorie Evans are the Honorary Chairs of the event.
“We are all very excited to name Hannah Storm as a Champion of Literacy,” said Literacy Advance of Houston Director, Jane Holsten. “Through her work as a newscaster, author and philanthropist, Hannah has made a tremendous impact and Literacy Advance is grateful to have her join our efforts to bring awareness to the illiteracy challenges facing Houston.”
This year, Literacy Advance of Houston celebrates 45 years of service in the City of Houston and its fifth year of the Champions of Literacy Series, a multi-annual fundraising and public awareness series that promotes literacy by acknowledging those who have made a difference in our community. In Houston, 52 percent of adults are functionally illiterate in English. Literacy Advance of Houston, a 501(c)(3) organization, fulfills its mission to make Houston a more literate city by teaching adults to read, write and communicate effectively in English in order to reach their full potential.
